Day 124 of 365 "Collecting Box Tops"

Day 124 of 365

“Collecting Box Tops”

Over the summer we collect box tops for the elementary school the younger boys attend. I have often wondered how many other moms are collecting box tops, juice containers, soda tabs or anything else we can collect to assist the school in providing whatever needs to be provided. I noticed that after 1st grade the teachers are not as adamant about collecting these items.

After your child matriculates to the 6th grade there seems to be less parental involvement. I believe that it is at this time they need even more attention. My son who will be in the 11th grade has signed up for classes without my permission. The only one that required my attention was the AP class and I am sure that is only because we have to pay a fee.

I have decided to be the mom that goes to school with her teenager when he registers. I am quite certain he can do it on his own, however, until he is out of our home we are the ones he answers to. My mother went to register me for each grade I attended and it was quite comforting. I am sure some of my friends thought it was strange, but it made me feel safe. Safe in the choices I was making because the woman that had been nurturing me continued to do so until I was attending UTMartin.

Our children seem to need us more as they grow and this tends to be the time we back up. I am not saying that our children will need us for everything but they will know that we will be there foe anything. My 16 year old is not capable of making life choices right now. I know his mom and dad. If he has their genes then he will need a little bit more instruction. If they are his parents then he will need them to hold him on the straight and narrow.

I’m just saying that our children may need us more as they move into the teenage years and we need to be there. As Christians we are responsible to bring them up in the admonition of Christ. My mother told me to be sure to keep my children safe, feed them, clothe them, educate them but most importantly give them Jesus. My mother’s words have become more precious and true to me the older I get and I will be obedient.
