Last year on this day we were in WashingtonDC
awaiting the inauguration of our nation’s first Black President. We had
actually arrived on the 18th after getting up very early, being
hindered by a flat tire and driving for what seemed like forever. We were
traveling with wonderful friends and each of us was excited.
On today, the 19th, we took the opportunity to
walk around and see the sights. Seeing the CapitolBuilding,
Lincoln Memorial, and getting a glance at the White House. Then walking around
to check out the best vantage point for the ceremony on the following day. It
was cold! So this was also an opportunity for us to figure out what to wear.
Didn’t really matter it was still cold!!!
We stayed in Virginia
because all of the other hotels were either booked or too expensive. All we
knew is that we had to be there. Even if it meant being on the outskirts of the
event and straining to see a Jumbotron, we were going to be in the midst. I was
excited.
Thinking of all the Blacks and Whites that struggled to see
this day happen, it was almost surreal. Getting to sleep that night was almost
impossible. We had to get up really early to be at the Metro and get in line.
We bought our passes on today so we would not have to wait in line. We were
prepared!!
Hope was palatable in the air everywhere we went. It was an
awesome time to be an American! Hope, Change and Promise were in the air.
