Charles-isms
"Normatic anesthesia", it is amazing how the conscience can be
desensitized and thus anesthetized. People will not question it
because they fear the reprisal of being ostracized.
In 2010, how can there still be failing schools? Has there
not been enough money poured in? Do the teachers not have to be trained more
and more? The supplies I have to send have gotten to be in a list that will
eventually require two pages. The books I buy my high school son have gotten to
be more expensive. Everyone needs a computer.
The actions of the persons that have the decision making
capabilities in education do not seem to be getting the American public the
bang for our buck. I am a mother of five children attending school. It is a
daunting task to have them prepared for school every morning. What am I sending
them to school for? Is it to only do well on a test? That is what it seems
like.
When I was in school, many moons ago, a student had to have
the grades to get into CLUE. Now the criterion is based in part on their TCAP
score. There is a proposal that teachers wages will be based partly on how well
their students do on the TCAP. My cousin bought up a good point: Suppose I am a
teacher whose class has several students that do not have a great support
system at home that assures they eat regularly, puts them to bed at a decent
hour or even stresses the importance of doing well in school. The TCAP scores
could be interesting. Contrast that with a teacher whose students are
benefiting from all of the things society says is necessary for a child to do
well in school. Those scores may be significantly higher. What can be done to
make it an equal playing field?
I have not read all of the details of such a thing. The mind
just wonders who will lose in this scenario. Both parties involved. We may lose
wonderful teachers. Teachers that know how to reach these children and give
them the security they need to do the best they can. We may also lose students
do to those teachers leaving that could reach them.
A child is a very delicate flower. I am just afraid we may
lose more generations before the “experts” get it right. Parents we have a hand
in this also. We have to be solid when it comes to education and the importance
of it. Our children need to learn to think, not just to have information in
their heads. To be a dictionary is not the goal. To be a thinking, reasoning
individual is what our children need to be a contributing person in the 21st
century.
Not to just be workers but to be innovators. Creators.
Inventors. Poets. Artists. Politicians.
