Day 23 of 365 "Children and Winning"

“Children and Winning”

Yesterday was the Derby Race for our Cub Scouts. They had a blast choosing the design for their dad to cut the block into for their car. Each one learned how to sand with the different sandpaper grit. They watched their father apply a base coat of primer and then black paint. Sanding after each application. Patiently painting the cars. Most of the boys used several colors. Then it was time for decals. So many decals. But they could each say they had a definite hand in creating these cars.

The preliminary race was awesome. The boys watched their cars come down the track and do quite well. Their father had just a few more things to do. He stayed up until 2am getting the axles and wheels just right.

The night of the big race, all six of the boys were very excited. They had a ball watching their cars run. One placed third and will go to the district race. Five placed in the top five and the sixth won most unique. It was great.

Dad was more excited than the children as he watched their faces. Seeing your children compete and not do as well as they wanted and still hold their composure is awesome. There was one of our boys that took it hard, but he just sat quietly for a few moments. Then was up running around with the other children there a short time later.

Children and winning. Their resilience is mind boggling. They can just shake it off and move on. Now he did have to be encouraged in the fact that his car did the best that particular car could do at this time. He then became excited about just playing with the others.

We could learn a thing or two from our children.
