“Who Needs your Marriage to Succeed?”
Contemplating the twenty six years we have been together and the twenty we have been married, I asked myself, “Who cares about your relationship?” I know that it means a great deal to me and I want it to succeed and be productive. So after thinking of how much it means to me to be married, I realized that it was more important to someone else. The Lord. Follow me if you will.
The Lord allowed us the opportunity to participate in one of the most awesome covenant relationships with Him and we get to enjoy all of the benefits and promises that come with it. This relationship carries the blessing of the Lord, love, intimacy with my spouse, a companion, a prayer partner, a confidante, support, conversation and anything else I forgot to mention. Along with that are all of the challenges, missteps, mishaps, misunderstandings, disgust, disillusionment, discouragement, hopelessness, disbelief and anything else I forgot to mention. The one saving grace is that the Lord is in the mix.
Without Him being the third cord that binds, I would dare say many of us would be in very different situations at this moment. It is because He has a desire for us to be complete in this covenant relationship that makes it seem it is one of the most difficult to sustain and understand. He knows that if we hold tight to this one covenant most other things will not seem so insurmountable.
So who needs your marriage to succeed: You do!! Why? It is a testament to the goodness of the Lord that once married we can show to the world. So who needs your marriage to succeed? The world does. There are so many interesting ideas about relationships floating around in the air that the Lord needs married soldiers on the battlefield, armor on, swords in hand and loudly proclaiming, “Marriage is still a God idea!!!”
